You saved an image from a website and it came down as `.webp`. Now Photoshop will not open it, or a form rejects it, or Windows Photo Viewer shows nothing. WEBP is well supported inside browsers and poorly supported outside them, which is exactly the gap this conversion fills.
What does not survive is animation. Animated WEBP files exist and PNG cannot represent them; converting gives you a single still frame.
WEBP is a modern, efficient format; PNG is a 1996 lossless one. A 150 KB WEBP photograph typically becomes a 1.5–2 MB PNG. If the size matters more than lossless fidelity, convert to JPG instead.
The conversion adds no new loss — PNG stores exactly what the decoded WEBP contained. If the WEBP itself was lossy, that damage is already in the pixels and stays there.
