What changes

• Transparency is lost. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become solid — normally white. If the WEBP has a cut-out subject, this is the thing to watch for.
• The file usually gets larger, because JPG is the less efficient format. Expect roughly 30–50% growth at matched quality.
• Animation is lost. Animated WEBP converts to a single still frame.
• A little detail goes, since this is a lossy-to-lossy transcode. Quality 85+ keeps it invisible.

Why won’t a website accept my WEBP image?

Many upload forms, print services and older applications only recognise JPG and PNG. Their validators predate WEBP and were never updated. Converting to JPG produces a file accepted essentially everywhere.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with a solid colour, usually white. Use PNG instead if transparency matters.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WEBP?

Usually, by roughly 30–50%, because JPG compresses less efficiently. That is the cost of universal compatibility.

Is quality lost in the conversion?
