AI Background Remover

Accurate AI background removal with hair detection. Replace, blur, gradient or transparent.

Remove the background from a photo automatically using an AI model that runs entirely on your device. Keep the result transparent, or drop in a solid colour, gradient, blur or custom image.

How it works

This tool runs a segmentation neural network — the same class of model a desktop editor would use — compiled to run inside your browser through WebAssembly. It analyses the image, predicts which pixels belong to the subject, and produces an alpha mask with soft edges around difficult regions like hair.

The model file downloads once, the first time you use the tool, and is cached afterwards. That download is the only network activity involved — your photograph is never uploaded. The model comes to your device; your image does not go anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Upload a photo — portraits and product shots give the best results.
  2. Choose the Best quality model for the most accurate cut-out, or a faster one if you are in a hurry.
  3. Wait while the background is removed on your device.
  4. Keep the transparent result, or replace the background with a colour, gradient, blur or your own image.
  5. Download as PNG to preserve transparency.

Using this for form photographs

Replacing a cluttered or off-white background with plain white on an otherwise genuine, recent, correctly-posed photograph is normal practice — it is what a photo studio would do anyway, and most form specifications require a plain background.

What is not acceptable is substantive misrepresentation: using an old photograph, editing your facial features, or compositing yourself into a picture you were not in. Keep the photograph honest and the background tidy.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded for processing?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your device and runs there. The traffic is inbound — the model — not outbound. After the first use it is cached and the tool works with no network at all.

Why is the first run so slow?

It downloads the machine-learning model, which is several megabytes. That happens once. Processing itself depends on your device — a modern laptop takes a few seconds, an older phone considerably longer.

The edges around hair look rough. Can I fix it?

Try the Best quality model if you used a faster one. Beyond that, results depend heavily on the source: good contrast between hair and background and even lighting make a large difference. Very fine flyaway strands are genuinely hard for any automatic tool.

Can I use this for a passport or exam photo?

For cleaning up the background of a genuine, recent, correctly-posed photograph, yes — that is a legitimate correction. Do not use it to alter your appearance or to place yourself in front of a fabricated setting.

What format should I download?

PNG, if you want transparency preserved. If you have replaced the background with a solid colour and need a small file for an upload, JPG is fine and much smaller.

Does it work on product photos?

Yes, and often better than on people — products usually have clear outlines and sit against simple backgrounds. Reflective and transparent items such as glassware are the hardest cases.
